The Gaffer Quiz, Number 2
Friday 28 October 2005
Here are the answers and some comments on the Second Gaffer Quiz. With the exception of Section D, on which the Chairman excelled, all the answers are in the Review or on the website - and clearly some of you need to pay more attention. As far as spellings go I accepted slightly incorrect spellings of Accattone say (with one c or one t) but came down heavily on more obvious ones like peculiarly Lancastrian spellings of Prague (Indeed the photo in L'Unita shows me bringing Owen to book on this).
As I said, it was a very close contest, which went to several recounts (but don't bother scrolling down as the result isn't here). The answers and my comments are in bold after each question. Incidentally Goober took the quiz in Shoreditch at the time the rest of you put pen to paper in the air.
SECTION A. Our Tours
1. How many times, including this one, have PFFC been on overseas tours? (1 mark)
Twelve
2. How many different countries have we visited on tour? (1)
Six: Italy, France, Czech Republic, Belgium, Switzerland, Holland
3. When and where was our first European tour, against which team did we play and what was the score? (4)
Zurich, FC Levante Wibi, 0-4
4. Name 3 UK airports PFFC have departed from. (This refers to official team departures.) (3)
Luton (Switzerland, Holland), Heathrow (first Rome trip), Stanstead (the rest, apart from 2 Eurostar journeys)
5. Name the 5 PFFC tour captains (5)
Paul Kayley, Raj, Ian, Ally, Kieran (only Goober got them all)
6. Only 1 member of the current PFFC touring squad was on the first tour. Who is he? (1)
Raj – he didn't make this trip in the end but was in the squad
SECTION B. Our Hosts
7. Who got lost in his own city searching for 'Hotel Des Gaffers'? (1)
Lele in Rome, 2004
8. Who took issue with the Gaffer's timekeeping on Pasolini's pitch? (1)
Mick Walton in Casarsa
9. Who commandeered a public bus while it was on its normal route and transformed it into the official PFFC team bus? (1)
Miroslav, in deepest Bohemia (not quite Jaroslav in the Chairman's fading memory). (Somebody put Filippo, which would have made an interesting spectacle. Certainly not me as I couldn't even commandeer a taxi in Rome this time.)
10. Which poet accommodated PFFC in a squat? (1)
Harry was the correct answer, which nobody got. (I was quite generous here. If for example you put 'Don't know his name someone in the Hague' (Goober) or 'The Hague collective of poets' (Owen) or 'that Dutch fellow' (the Chairman) you got half a mark.)
11. Who was 'rarely seen, but always present'? (1)
Alessandro in Paris. (Amazingly nobody got this, given it was a recent tour and one of Filippo's own descriptions. Tempted to give Goober a bonus point for 'God, © Cornish Al 2001'. No marks for 'Goober Fox', though I might have given Clarkey one if he had taken the test.)
12. Who stuck a dagger in the Gaffer's bed? (1)
Ignazio Barbagallo, the opposing gaffer in Sicily. (Again some generosity here for 'Stipsy King', the name of the band and our opponents and the detailed geographical location of the agriturismo provided by the Chairman (full mark in each case) whereas the 'Sicilian host' got half a mark.)
SECTION C. Mishaps on tour
Our wonderful and memorable trips have occasionally suffered from the odd mishap along the way. Identify the following unfortunate philosophers:
13. Who got locked in (and out) of an apartment in Pordenone? (1)
Rob the Cat
14. Who left an unlocked car on the touchline in Parisot? (1)
Goober (it was actually left unlocked overnight and no one knew where it was)
15. Who injured his neck in Prague? (1)
Ian 'Davros' Coyne
16. Who missed the Eurostar to Bruxelles? (1)
Raj
17. Who took the wrong train in Holland? (1)
The team, or as somebody said half the team. (Full mark for both of those – it was probably three quarters, with the other quarter waiting for us.)
18. Which two philosophers walked into the wrong apartment in Zurich? (2)
Cornish Al and Raj (though Goober points out there was a mysterious ginger haired third person in the vicinity too.)
19. Who:
(a) left his bag in a Rome restaurant?
(b) left his luggage at Treviso?
(c) lost his wallet and bag but won the match in Sicily? (3)
Gibbo, Arliss (nobody got that) and of course Clarkey
20. Which two philosophers forgot to take their suntan lotion to Sicily? (2)
Ally and Damian
SECTION D. The Chairman and the Gaffer
21. How many miles did the chairman and the gaffer clock up in 9 days on their recent 'slow' trip to the USA?
(a) 2468
(b) 1922
(c) 1975
(d) 1961
(e) 3179 (1)
(a) 2468
(1922 date of Pasolini's birth, 1975 the date of his death, 1961 the date of his first film and the year Gaffer was born, 3179 wrong answer)
22. Which was the Chairman's first PFFC tour? (1)
Prague
23. Excluding this one, how many tours has the Gaffer been on? (1)
Eleven (i.e. all of them)
24. Where did the Chairman make his 'Agincourt' speech? (1)
Parisot (or Caylus, as Goober recalls - his astute memory was obviously focused more on the dinner than the car he left unlocked down the road the same evening)
25. To whom did the Gaffer show the red card in Meson Bilbao in May this year? (1)
Some of you put 'Owen', and while there may be good reasons, it was of course Silvio Berlusconi.
26. Name 3 places (towns or cities) the Chairman has resided in over the last 5 years, and name 3 Gaffer residences over the same period (6)
Chairman – Harwich, Carcassonne (or Serres) and
Waterloo (or Southwark)
Gaffer – Bs: Bologna, Birmingham, Bra and Bloomsbury.
(Goober very correctly also points out another two for me - Westminster and
'Seven Sisters', well Stamford Hill I would call it, though Mark Perryman who
lived in the next street inevitably calls it 'south Tottenham'. I would also
like to point out loud and clearly that I HAVE NEVER LIVED IN MILTON KEYNES, though
I do spend quite a bit of time there.)
27. What was the score in games in a pool match played between the Chairman and the Gaffer in a Milwaukee bar, the night before Cornish Al's wedding?
(a) 1-1
(b) 2-2
(c) 3-3
(d) 4-4
(e) 5-5
(f) 6-6
(g) 7-7 (1)
4-4
SECTION E. Pier Paolo Pasolini
28. Name 5 Pasolini films (Italian or English titles will suffice) (5)
Too many to list but you can consult my article on the Open Democracy website.
29. In which year was Pasolini born? (1)
1922
30. Where was he born? (1)
Bologna (NOT Friuli, where he was brought up)
31. In which year did he die? (Anyone who gets this wrong will start on the bench) (1)
1975
32. Which film featured his mother as a leading character? (1)
Il Vangelo Secondo Matteo (The Gospel According to Matthew)
33. Name his first collection of poetry (10 marks for this)
Poesie a Casarsa (Poems of Casarsa. Nobody got that though Filippo was closest)
34. What was his last film? (5 marks)
Salò (120 Days of Sodom)
35. Name four actors who appeared in Pasolini films (4)
Too many to list. (Owen was very astute here. You can include Mick Walton who was an extra in The Canterbury Tales and Pasolini's mother. This would be acceptable in the neo-realist tradition.)
36. What position on the pitch did Pasolini play? (1)
Left wing (wing is acceptable)
37. Where was his body found? (1)
Ostia
(Total: 75 marks)
Marks will be (and were) deducted for significant spelling mistakes.
